Stamp Duty, also referred to as Stamp Duty Tax, Stamp Taxes, or Documentary Stamp Tax, is a levy applied to the purchase of property or to various legal documents such as receipts, marriage licenses, bank checks, land and other asset transactions. Payment requires a tax stamp to be affixed, after which the document becomes legally effective and is officially recorded. The duty may also be imposed on transfers of real estate, patents, securities, and copyrights.
