Market note

The United States is the one market where the applicant tracking system matters more than the job board. American companies of any size post to their own career page first, and that page is almost always Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, Ashby or iCIMS — which is why the Sources table below is dominated by ATS domains rather than by boards. It is also the reason a US posting is usually attributable to a named company: the ATS URL identifies the employer directly, with no scraping of an aggregator's obfuscated listing.

Frequently asked questions

How many job postings are there in the United States?

The counter above is our live count of US postings. It is not the same number as the BLS JOLTS job openings figure and should not be compared to it directly: JOLTS is a monthly establishment survey that estimates openings across the whole economy, including roles never advertised online, while we count individual online postings after deduplicating the same role across boards. JOLTS is the better measure of labour demand in aggregate; posting-level data is the better measure of what is being advertised, by whom, with what requirements.

Which sources do you cover in the US?

The Sources table above ranks them live. In practice it is the major ATS platforms — Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, Ashby, iCIMS, SmartRecruiters, Taleo, SuccessFactors — plus the large boards. The full source list has all of them.

Do you have state or city-level US data?

Not as a page, but the location filters in the job posting API go down to city level, so a state or metro cut is one filter away.

How far back does the US job postings data go?

The monthly table above starts in November 2022 and runs to the current month.

Methodology

  • What we count. Individual online job postings, not survey-based vacancy estimates. A posting is counted once, on the date it was published.
  • Where they come from. Job boards, company career pages behind applicant tracking systems, and aggregators — see the full source list.
  • Deduplication. The same role published on several boards is merged into one posting, so multi-source coverage inflates neither counts nor trends.
  • Geography. A posting counts towards a country when any of its locations resolve to that country, so a multi-country posting is counted in each. Country breakdown tables instead attribute each posting to its primary location, so a single posting never appears twice in the same table.
  • Refresh. New postings are discovered daily; the figures on this page are recomputed monthly against the live dataset.
